Since the 2004 premiere of the Spoon River Duo at Vassar College, this ensemble has won the acclaim of composers and audiences alike within the New York City metropolitan area by creating a unique and rarely heard ensemble. The duo’s collaboration with composers has led to premieres and exclusive performances at Columbia University, Barnard College , and the Mannes College of Music. American poet Edgar Lee Master’s Spoon River Anthology inspired the Duo’s inception and was the text used by composer Terry Champlin for the duo’s first commission. The Spoon River Duo presents works exclusive to the voice and guitar medium or that share a special place in the history of the ensemble. Sharing the gift of music is another part of SRD’s mission.
